For this assignment I teamed up with another classmate to have a philosophical argument with each other in the form of Socratic Dialogue. The purpose of a Socratic dialogue is to ethically argue with another person. The goal is to find flaws in their argument and use reasoning as well as your own evidence to try to convince them that they’re wrong. The ultimate goal is to get them to change their mind and believe that you are right and they’re wrong. For my project my group chose the topic of drone warfare. My partner was arguing against the use of drone warfare. He mainly argued that the collateral damage, which is thousands of innocent non-combatant civilians destroys lives and propagates hate for America, which inevitably increases terrorist recruitment. I argued that these drone strikes are the most effective way to destroy terrorist operations and kill terrorists. The strikes also allow for less US military involvement, which significantly decreases the rate of US soldier casualties. Ultimately my partner was convinced that drone strikes have too much potential benefit to completely cease use.
