Another revised paragraph project 3

ORIGINAL:

There is another idea about college majors that is proposed by Carter, that every major falls under a specific metagenre. A “metagenre indicates a structure of similar ways of doing that point to similar ways of writing and knowing,” (Carter). There are four metagenres that Carter describes are problem solving, empirical inquiry, research from sources, and performance. Business Administration as a major at UNE is a blend of two of Carter’s meta genres. Business Administration integrates both the problem solving and empirical inquiry metagenre within its learning outcomes, and its course description. The metagenre of problem solving is heavily incorporated within the requirements of the major. In the departments mission statement they “strive to develop in students the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve problems,” This is close to identical to Carter’s example of problem solving. Business Administration also falls under the empirical inquiry metagenre, which Carter defines as “a way of doing that consists of answering questions by drawing conclusions from systematic investigation based on empirical data,” (Carter 396). The major uses empirical inquiry very often. One of the five learning outcomes is to develop the students ability to use the empirical method. According to the learning outcomes upon completion the student should be able to “demonstrate an ability to conduct methodological, secondary research into business issues, which may relate to general business or to a specific business function, which requires familiarity with a range of data, research sources and appropriate methodologies,”. Using data and conducting research to find an answer to something are fundamental characteristics of the empirical method. Therefore, business administration must contain empirical inquiry.

REVISED:

Another trait of any valuable major, that isn’t mentioned anywhere by Boyer is an idea presented by Michael  Carter. He proposes that every major is unique in its ways of knowing, doing, and writing. Which means that among the different disciplines many of them differ in their writing techniques, and teaching. The ways of knowing are the ways the student genuinely learns, according to Carter, this is usually through writing. The ways of doing bridge the ways of writing and ways of knowing. Carter (compiles/organizes) these ways of doing into groups called metagenres. A “metagenre indicates a structure of similar ways of doing that point to similar ways of writing and knowing,” (Carter). There are four metagenres that Carter describes, they are problem solving, empirical inquiry, research from sources, and performance.

Business Administration as a major at UNE is a blend of two of Carter’s meta genres. Business Administration predominantly uses problem solving but has some integrations of the empirical inquiry metagenre within its learning outcomes, and its course description. The metagenre of problem solving is heavily incorporated within the requirements of the major. In the departments mission statement they “strive to develop in students the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve problems,” This is close to identical to Carter’s example of problem solving. The ways of writing that are unique to problems solving include business reports, management plans, and reports to management. These are all ways of writing seen within business administration.  Business Administration also shares characteristics of the empirical inquiry metagenre, which Carter defines as “a way of doing that consists of answering questions by drawing conclusions from systematic investigation based on empirical data,” (Carter 396). One of the five learning outcomes of the major is to develop the students ability to use the empirical method. Therefore, business administration must contain empirical inquiry as well as problems solving.

EXPLANATION: I thought the original paragraph didn’t have much introduction to Carter’s ideas. So I broke the first part of the OG paragraph and expanded it into its own unit. Moreover, I revised the rest of the OG paragraph by adding new evidence from Carter and making it flow better.
