HW for 11/20

Boyer proposes that for an undergraduate major to be of any value then it needs to be an “enriched major”, which will “[encourage] students not only to explore a field in depth, but also help them put their field of study into perspective,” (110). Boyer describes this societal shift towards more technical majors as “the new vocationalism in higher education,” (103).  A “metagenre indicates a structure of similar ways of doing that point to similar ways of writing and knowing,”…

Draft Conclusion Project 3

Draft Conclusion Project 3

The study of business administration at the University of New England is a good option for students, because it is an enriched major by all of Boyer’s definitions. Business administration teaches the historical context of the major through certain required classes. All students are required to learn all the basic ethical questions that they will most likely encounter. Also, students will have to learn the social and economic implications of business administration. Finally business administration at UNE offers their students…

Another revised paragraph project 3

ORIGINAL: There is another idea about college majors that is proposed by Carter, that every major falls under a specific metagenre. A “metagenre indicates a structure of similar ways of doing that point to similar ways of writing and knowing,” (Carter). There are four metagenres that Carter describes are problem solving, empirical inquiry, research from sources, and performance. Business Administration as a major at UNE is a blend of two of Carter’s meta genres. Business Administration integrates both the problem…

ORIGINAL: Business Administration as a major at the University of New England, based on their online catalog and course selection is a full enriched major. Much attention is given to the social and economic implications, as well as the ethical and moral issues within the major. One of the learning outcomes of business administration is to “demonstrate awareness to the importance of the ethical requirements of business activities,” this learning outcome clearly shows the intention that a student will learn…

Revision Plan, Project 3

Task 1 I use much affirming when it comes to Boyer’s idea of an enriched major. I completely agree with him and think majors should have a balance of technical education and liberal arts. I challenge Carter’s meta genres. Carter thinks that a major can only fit into one metagenre, but I challenge that business administration is two meta genres. 2. I need to do a lot of work for Carter’s metagenres. I have a lot of introduction for Boyer…

HW for 10/6

Business Administration as a major at UNE is a blend of two of Carter’s meta genres. Business Administration integrates both the problem solving and empirical inquiry metagenre within its learning outcomes, and its course description. The metagenre of problem solving is heavily incorporated within the requirements of the major. In the departments mission statement they “strive to develop in students the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve problems,” This is close to identical to Carter’s example of problem solving. Business Administration also…

Task 2 due 11/4

Task 2 due 11/4

Does Business Administration teach about the history and traditions os business? Do you think Business Administration offers a balance between a technical education, and a liberal arts education? In what way does Business Administration require problem solving, and/or teach it. How important is research from outside sources in the major? Is there a large range of different jobs that hire people with a Business Administration degree? Why should someone want to major in this?

Task 1 due 11/4

Task 1 due 11/4

All colleges should solely include Boyer’s idea of enriched majors. Any major that is not enriched has no place on a college campus. It could be that the major is too technical and career focused and would be better suited at a trade school. Regardless Boyer describes three necessary characteristics for a major to be considered enriched. First there must be an examination of the history and tradition of the specific major. Second there must be the provided knowledge of…

HW for 11/1

The major thing that I didn’t see for the goals for the business administration major is that there’s a lack of the history and traditions of that major. There is a lot of emphasis on economics and social implication for business. Mostly because that has a lot to do with the types of jobs that this major typically leads to. There are a lot of goals of the major that correlate to the four meta genres. Especially the problem solving…

3. Two different ideas for genre are “a typified response to recurrent rhetorical situations,” and “Genre occupies a middle position between microlevel and macrolevel forms of analysis, providing a link between particular linguistic processes and particular cultures that both constitute and are constituted by these processes” 2. The problem Carter is addressing is the lack of a relationship between writing and knowledge in their disciplines. “One way of helping faculty understand the integral role of writing in their various disciplines…
