While Americans are debating whether to abandon the liberal arts in order to achieve educational domain, other countries are taking note of our liberal arts model of education. While many Americans are in agreement that the liberal arts are just a waste of many and a college education, and think students should be focused on studying STEM in order to catch up with other countries’ education. Other countries like China have been visiting the US, suggesting they are considering adopting that style of education. “The Chinese may be coming around to the view that a primary focus on technical training is not serving them adequately—that if they aspire to world leadership, they will have to provide young people with a broader perspective,” (Ungar).

A liberal arts education teaches students to develop an open mind, and to be receptive to new ideas and perspectives. “[A liberal education is] a wellspring of ideas and questions, and a way of promoting flexibility and openness to diverse perspectives” (Scheuer). This open sort of thinking could be a way to more civil and respectful conversations, especially in politics. “It may be only liberal education that can help lead the way back to comity and respectful conversation about issues before us” (Ungar).
