HW for 10/6

Business Administration as a major at UNE is a blend of two of Carter’s meta genres. Business Administration integrates both the problem solving and empirical inquiry metagenre within its learning outcomes, and its course description. The metagenre of problem solving is heavily incorporated within the requirements of the major. In the departments mission statement they “strive to develop in students the ability to recognize, analyze, and solve problems,” This is close to identical to Carter’s example of problem solving. Business Administration also falls under the empirical inquiry metagenre, which Carter defines as “a way of doing that consists of answering questions by drawing conclusions from systematic investigation based on empirical data,” (396). The major uses empirical inquiry very often. One of the five learning outcomes is to develop the students ability to use the empirical method. According to the learning outcomes upon completion the student should be able to “demonstrate an ability to conduct methodological, secondary research into business issues, which may relate to general business or to a specific business function, which requires familiarity with a range of data, research sources and appropriate methodologies,”.

Dear Tami Gower,

I am currently an undeclared student at UNE, and was interested in learning more about the business administration major. I was hoping we could talk in person, and I could ask you some questions regarding the major. I’m hoping this could be a good opportunity for me to get a better sense of the required education and real world application of the major.
