3. The central tension Boyer discusses is the tension between the liberal arts idea of college, and more technical idea. Both professors and students have been at a divide. “There really is the two cultures phenomenon on this campus. The two sides have a hard time talking to each other. Today there is some superiority emanating from the technical side.” These two sides are finding it more difficult to balance their curriculum in a way where they’re both satisfied.
His enriched major “[encourages] students not only to explore a field in depth, but also to help them put their field of study into perspective.” He proposes this could help by intertwining the curriculum. In college there should never be a major that is too narrow. Too fully function there should be liberal arts education along with technical education, otherwise it’s not an enriched major. “There can be no adequate technical education which is not liberal, and no liberal education which is not technical.”
